EVA
by Peter Dickinson

Title:  Bungle in the Jungle

Grade Level: 9-10

Subjects:  English, Science, Psychology

Learner Outcomes:  Students will be able to:

Time Frame:  one or two 90-minute class periods

Materials:  vocabulary list from the assigned text Eva by Peter Dickinson
dictionaries or topic reference books for defining terms

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Internet-ready computer, browser, game-producing software such as www.puzzlemaker.com or www.quia.com

Teacher Notes:  In this activity students will use computers with Internet connection.  Make sure that every participating student has on file a signed Acceptable Use Agreement and/or parental permission slip.

Procedures:
1. Cooperative groups are formed and assigned to create a vocabulary lesson for the class. They are to accomplish this by the Expert Jigsaw group method, a strategy in which each member of the group becomes an expert on one type of vocabulary words like psychology words or science words or futuristic words or words from literature study connected with the novel. Together the team then constructs a means of teaching the entire vocabulary to the rest of the class using verbal, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic strategies.
    (get Expert Jigsaw Directions)

2.  Following this teaching/learning activity, each team will create a word game as an application and/or assessment of team learning. Games can be created at the site Quia  or Puzzlemaker.
NOTE: The activity may end now and a vocabulary test scheduled.

3.  As an assessment of both teaching and learning, each team will play the games created by every other team.
NOTE: The activity may end now and a vocabulary test scheduled.

4.  Teams will play a game of PowerPoint Jeopardy.  The questions for the game will come from the vocabulary terms, but be set up ahead of time by the teacher. (Game instructions)

Modifications:  Lesson can be adjusted based on the individual's IEP. Teams with a member requiring assistance may consider letting that member work with a partner.

Enrichment activities:  Ring books may be created with index cards for the different types of vocabulary words. Ring books are made from index cards with a hole punched in one corner; the cards are held together by a circular metal key ring-type holder.  These become  a sort of flashcard or personal dictionary or word bank for student use. (You may wish to use color-coded index cards for different parts of speech, specialized vocabulary, or different vocabulary units. Additional vocabulary cards may be added throughout the course, if desired.)

Evaluation/Assessment:  Students will be assessed on the lessons created, the difficulty of their word game, and the number of points their teams accumulates during the Jeopardy game.
If students will take a quiz, teacher will prepare and administer it.
