GRADE LEVELS: 10-12
SUBJECTS: English Language Arts, Science, Art, Family and Consumer Science
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
MATERIALS: varies with project
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS: Internet and computer
TEACHER NOTES: This lesson is designed to be vague in order for the teacher and/or students to adjust the projects to individual needs or interests.
PROCEDURES:
Students will work on an out-of-class extended project, either independently or collaboratively. Students will choose their project, which may be modified by the student(s) with prior teacher approval. Students may create their own project relating to this unit with prior teacher approval.
SUGGESTED PROJECTS:
1. Making a quilt block from a tessellation
Students will go to http://members.aol.com/sewquilty/ to learn how to do a quilt block. The block design must be a tessellation.2. Studying a beehive.
Students will obtain a queen bee and some workers to begin a hive. These should be maintained in a controlled, observable environment. Students will observe how the bees construct the hive and interact in their ecosystem. Students will maintain a computer log of their findings and observations.
3. Creating a block print
of a tessellation.
Students will make a block print of a tessellation that they designed. They should refer to the following site for instructions on block printing.
MODIFICATIONS:
Students will choose their own projects; therefore, they may choose the project that they are capable of doing as determined by their special needs.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
Students may choose to extend their project. For example, they could make an entire quilt, produce honey for distribution, create a portfolio of block prints, or print original tessellations on T-shirts.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
Students will develop a contract prior to doing the project. In this, they will specify their plan of action, their anticipated results, the point value of their project, and the division of labor. The teacher will then assess the project based on how well they met the terms of their contract.
