Lesson 1: Cells The Units of Life

Grade Level: 6th

Subject: Science

Learner Outcomes:

• Students will be able to discuss the history leading to cell theory.
• Students will be able to explain the difference between the compound light microscopes and the electron microscope.
• Students will be able to explain the importance of the cell theory.

Materials:

• overhead projector
• compound microscope
• transpariencies
• prepared slides

 Glencoe Science Voyages Level Red, Glencoe Interactive CD Rom.

•  Students use extreme care when working with microscopes, microscope slides
•  Glass slides and cover slips can cause cuts.
•  Students carry microscopes with both hands.
•  Students wash their hands at end of experiment.

• Use prepared Power Point demonstration of cells to introduce lesson.
• Separate the students into two groups, those that will view slides with the stereoscopic microscope and those that will view slides with the compound light microscope.
• Students will note the differences that they observe and record.
• Whole group discussion of their observations.

• See any IEP specifications that might apply
• Placement of students desks in classroom
