Lesson 3:  Dictionary skills

Grade Level:  Sixth grade

Subjects:  Science, Media & Math

Learner Outcomes:

• Students will acquire a spelling vocabulary from Glencoe Science Voyages: Level Red. These words are also included in a Power Point presentation.
• Students will use electronic editing as well as traditional editing resources to correct spelling errors and demonstrate the appropriate use of general reference source of a dictionary and read the various meanings of a dictionary entry to determine the meaning of a word.

Materials:  Pencil, notebook, paper, dictionary

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computers, Encarta, Power Point

Procedures:

1. Each of you may choose a partner to work with on the computer.
2. Copy the vocabulary words from Power Point presentation into your notebook.
3. Define 1/2 of your vocabulary list using the computer dictionary.
4. Define 1/2 of your vocabulary list using a dictionary.
5. Alphabetize your list.
6. Turn in your definitions.
7. Turn in your alphabetized list on another sheet of paper.

Evaluation/Assessment: Quiz on vocabulary words.  Notebooks will be checked.
