Teacher Notes:

Collect unit related book listed under
materials from library

Set up laptop and large screen monitor

Send home permission slips for Storytelling
Festival held yearly at Jackson's Mill near Clarksburg, WV and/or a field
trip to a local museum to see a quilting demonstration.

Send home parent/family involvement letter.

Tell students to bring a family quilt
to display and relate the story the quilt tells (for lesson two)

Schedule Star Lab inflatable mobile planetarium
or a field trip to a planetarium
Procedures
First Period
-
The teacher will display several examples
of quilts for the students to view.
-
The teacher will do a preread for The
Patchwork Quilt beginning with the students using the K-W-Lstrategy.
-
The student will share prior knowledge
of quilts and what they want to know about quilts.
-
Student will chart K-W responses and
display chart in the classroom.
-
Throughout the unit, students will chart
what they have learned about quilts in the third column on the K-W-L chart.
-
The teacher will introduce story and
vocabulary.
-
The student will listen and respond to
the story as the teacher reads it aloud.
-
The teacher will encourage critical thinking
by students responding to questions.
Second/Third Periods
-
Using laptop computer and large screen
monitor, the teacher will conduct whole group instruction by visiting site
Women of the West Museum and clicking
on enter, then story quilt.
-
The class will make and display a story
quilt. Each student will write and publish a story about a special
memory using writing and publishing software and design a quilt square
on oak tag to reflect their story. Quilt squares will be stapled
to front of the story and tied together with yarn. The finished story
quilt will be displayed on a large bulletin board. By lifting individual
quilt squares, a student can read the stories. Suggestion:
Scan the stories and quilt squares to post on your school's web page.
Modifications:
The
teacher will modify lesson to meet student's IEP (Individual Educational
Program
and/or special
needs)
Enrichment Activities:

The teacher will send a parent involvement
letter home with each student asking the parent/guardian to work with their
child/children in creating a family heirloom, such as a patchwork quilt
square, photo album, or scrapbook.
