How much exercise do we need?

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

  1. The student will discuss the definition of diabetes and the two major types.
  2. The student will identify and list the benefits of exercise and its relationship to healthy lifestyles.
  3. The student will describe the impact of exercise on diabetes.
  4. The student will identify the symptoms of and  describe how to help someone who has low blood sugar.
  5. The student will search a fitness site.
  6. The student will search a diabetes site.
DURATION OF LESSON:    30-45 minutes

List/define and discuss words to know

List and discuss the benefits of physical exercise
  1. improved blood sugar control

  7. improved mood, attitude, self-esteem
  8. improved circulation
  9. improved energy levels


After reading the CNN article, "Being overweight creates a heavy risk for diabetes" from the Internet
 

  1. List and discuss the impact of exercise on diabetes
  2. maintains healthy weight and wards off diabetes
  3. delays or stops the toll of organ damage
  4. lessons the work of the pancreas, the organ that makes insulin and regulates blood sugar
  5. helps to burn up glucose in the blood stream
  6. produces muscle which burns up glucose faster


List and disucss the symptoms of low blood sugar

  1. sweaty
  2. hungry
  3. weak
  4. dizzy
  5. confused
  6. change in behavior
  7. headaches
  8. tingling in mouth and/or fingers
List and discuss treatment for someone with low blood sugar (Hypoglycemia)
 
  1. When symptoms occur, confirm with blood sugar test, if possible.
  2. When in doubt, treat.
  3. Treat immediately.
  4. If unconscious, get to doctor immediately.
  5. If conscious, give fast acting sweet drink or food available. Allow 10-25 minutes for the sugar to be effective and repeat if no improvement is seen.


Common choices may be:

A.  orange juice (1/2 cup)
B.  regular soda (3/4 cup)
C.  4 lumps of sugar
D.  12 jelly beans
E.  3-4 small sugar mints
F.  4 tsp. of sugar, honey, or syrup, placed under the tongue
G.  instant glucose (20 grams)
H.  milk (3/4-1 cup)
MODIFICATIONS: 
  1. Refer to student IEP to determine specific modifications/accomodations 
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES: 
  1. Complete word search puzzle.
  2. Complete diabetes games and word finds
  3. Play fitness monopoly game
