HOW MANY CAN I BUY? |
GRADE LEVEL: 4
SUBJECTS: HEALTH, MATH, WRITING
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
1. The students will be able to write a math
word problem using grocery store ads.
2. The students will be able to determine the cost
of grocery items used in the home.
3. The students will be able to compare prices
at different stores for the same items.
DURATION OF LESSON:
two 45 minute class sessions
MATERIALS:
1. ads for food items from several grocery stores.
2. paper and pencil
3. overhead
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
Computer Internet access for each student.
TEACHER NOTES:
- Have a student/parent Internet permission form
on file
PROCEDURES:
DAY 1:
- Teacher needs to go to web site ad pages to print ads before
hand for students.
- Have a grocery store ad page on the board
so all students can see it.
- Explain to students that they are going to write
word problems using the ads.
- Have students choose one ad to work on together
in the classroom.
- Brainstorm with students the amount of money to
be used to buy the product and how many of the item is to be bought.
- Using the overhead and a transparency model for
the students how to write a math word problem using the ad and the amount
of money to be spent and the number of items to be bought.
- Continue to work with students on the overhead
having students choose items and amount of money to be spent.
DAY 2:
- Display various grocery store ads for students
to view. (Make sure ads are from different stores.)
- Have students choose one ad to use to write a
word problem.
- Have students write one problem and then trade
ads with another student.
- Have students continue trading ads and writing
word problems until each student has completed three word problems.
- Have students read one word problem.
- Discuss with students the ads for the same product
at different prices.
MODIFICATIONS:
Provide modifications for Individual Educational Plans
for students.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
- Students will go to the computer lab.
- After logging in, students will go to the leafy-green site.
- When students are on the site, students should choose the
Math section.
- When on the Math section, students should choose a lesson
to complete.
- Students will log on to the abcteach web site and
work more word problems.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: oral, students will write five word problems
using newspaper ads, rubric provided.
