LEARNER OUTCOMES:

DURATION OF LESSON: Three 45
- minute periods
MATERIALS:
- Dragon

- Computers with word
processing program for publication of process paragraph.
- Computers with Internet access.
- Pictures of food items from magazines
- PowerPoint presentation of the writing process
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE:
Computers with word processing program for publication of process paragraph.
TEACHER NOTES:
Students shall have a completed Acceptable Use Policy
Contract on file with the school.
PROCEDURES:
- Discuss the food choices made by Dragon in the story, Dragon
Gets By
- Name and discuss the food groups listed on the food pyramid.
- Evaluate Dragon's diet in reference to the food pyramid.
- Discuss cooperative group guidelines prior to enrichment activities.
- Discuss the writing process using power point program.
- After completion of center activity, write a paragraph sequencing
the steps involved in making an edible turkey.
MODIFICATIONS
- Student IEP's shall be followed.
- Collage and recipe activities shall be done as a cooperative group.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:
- Have students cut pictures out of magazines and make a collage of
healthy foods.
- Encourage students to evaluate their own food choices in reference
to the food pyramid.
- Make a simple recipe in class. Set up centers for groups of four
students with directions and ingredients. Final product will be an edible
turkey.
- Visit School Menu and Nutrition Cafe to play learning games based
on the food pyramid.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
The final project will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Student paragraph indicates sequence of steps indicating beginning,
middle, and end of the process.
- Students can distinguish the food groups among the food items used
to make the edible turkey: directions via The Complete Book of Arts &

- Students contributed relevant ideas
