Duration of Lesson: Three 45 minute class periods

2.  Power Point on heart vocabulary
3.  Essay directions
4.  Rubric for evaluating essay

Computer with Internet access
Data Projector
Teacher Notes: Students should have signed an acceptable use for the computer form. 
Procedures: 1. As an introductory activity, students will use the internet to go to  brainpop
2. The student will select “Heart” from the Health movie list.
3. After watching the movie students will label the parts of the heart and trace the path of blood through the heart on the human heart handout.  An answer sheet is included for the teacher.
4.  Teacher  will present vocabulary using power point presentation
5.  Students will read about the heart using The Heart:  An Online Exploration 
6.  Students can also learn about the heart using Your Heart and How it Works.
5. Students will write an essay about  “One hour in the life of a red blood cell.”  Have the students pretend that they are a red blood cell and have them write an essay about the journey of the red blood cell.  Use evaluation handout for directions.  Copy the human heart handout for labeling.
6.  The teacher can evaluate the paper using the rubric.
Modifications: All IEP modifications should be followed. 
Enrichment Activities: The student will identify the parts of the heart.
The student will explain path of blood flowing through the heart.

Assessment: 
Students will label a blank diagram of the heart and write an essay describing the flow of blood through the heart.
