Grade Level: 9th and 10th

Learner Outcomes: After completing this lesson, students will be able to: list some common heart problems and describe them, describe a healthy diet for the heart and know what affect this diet has on the body.
Duration of Lesson: Four class periods (45 minutes each). 
Materials: 1. One copy of "A Healthy Heart Diet" per student.
2. One copy of "rubric" per student.

Courseware:
Computer with Internet access
Data Projector
Teacher Notes: Make certain that students have a signed acceptable use policy on file.
The teacher will need to install "Shockwave" in order to play the "Make Your Plate Proud" game.
Procedures: 1.  Teacher will present PowerPoint presentation called "Are you what you eat?"
2.  Students will learn about the food pyramid at Kellogg's. 
3.  Next have students play "Make Your Plate Proud" by accessing the Kellogg's web site, selecting "Nuts about Nutrition", then choosing "Make Your Plate Proud". Last, select "Play the Game".  Here students will practice planning healthy menus.
4.  Students will read information about good nutrition for the heart including some of the following:
HeartInfo.org
American Heart Association
WebMD Health
Linking Nutrition and Heart Disease
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
5 a Day

5.  Have students plan a heart healthy menu for one day using the National Heart, Lungs, and Blood Institute planner.

Modifications: All IEP modifications should be followed. 
Enrichment Activities: Students can be divided into cooperative groups to research and then do presentations on a particular heart problem and explain how diet might help prevent or improve this condition.  Students would be asked to have audio visual aids.

Assessment: 
Have students write an essay entitled "A Healthy Heart Diet".  A scoring rubric is included.
