GRADE LEVEL:  Sixth through Eighth grade.
 

SUBJECTS:   Reading and Computer/Technology
 

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

   Students will learn safety rules for using the Internet.
   Students will learn how to use a search engine.
   Students will learn to navigate on the Internet.
 

MATERIALS:

   Markers
   Poster Board
  Copy of KWL chart for students

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS:

   Internet access  (preferably a lab)
   Power Point presentation

TEACHER NOTES:

   Student Internet Acceptable Use Policy
   Follow individual IEP'S
 

PROCEDURES:

   Introduce lesson by handing out copies of the KWL chart about Internet safety to each student.
   Brainstorm with class what they already know about Internet safety, letting each student fill out their own charts.
   Brainstorm with class what they want to know about Internet safety, letting each student fill out their own charts
   Explain to students that there are several rules that should be obeyed by young Internet surfers.
   Introduce the Internet Safety rules by using the Power Point presentation.
   Discuss orally and ask for feedback and questions concerning these rules.
   Students will make their own posters displaying the Internet safety rules.
   Demonstrate basic navigating skills needed to find information on the Internet such as:

  • where to write the address on the browser
  • how to reload the page if all of the graphics didn't download
  • how to bookmark a site they like
  • how to go back to a site they're been to before
   Allow students to "surf the www."  Use Yahooligans or Kids of America search engines to find topics of their choice.  (Restrict children to these search engines because it will point them to only "child appropriate sites.")
   When students are "surfing the net," ask questions that will encourage higher thinking skills.  Examples:
      1.  Why do you like this site?
      2.  Do you think other students will enjoy this site?   Why?
      3.  Could this site be beneficial to them in school?
      4.  Would you recommend this site to others?  Why?
      5.  Would this site be age appropriate and safe for students?
    Have students finish their KWL charts with information that they have learned.

MODIFICATIONS:

   Modifications based on IEP'S of individual students.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES:

   Allow students to come back to computer lab to browse the Internet.
