Duration of the Lesson: Five 45minute sessions

Materials:  Provided list of topics and access to reference materials

Technology Tools/courseware:  PC with Internet connections,  Browser of choice, Search Engines of choice, scanner (optional), digital camera (optional), Word Processing program of choice,  presentation software of choice (optional), and digital projector.

Teacher notes: The following list is prioritized according to difficulty of the topic, least difficult to most difficult.  Teacher may want to assign topics according to ability level of the individual groups.  Teacher will need to explain that grade and pitch refer to the incline of a surface in the following context.
1.   What is the relationship between highway road grades and slope?
2.   What is the relationship between driveway grades and fire insurance rates?
3.   Why are railroad grades of 2% considered steep?
4.   Why do wheel-chair ramps have to meet certain standards of incline?
5.   What is the relationship between the pitch of a roof and the roofing materials that may be used?
6.   What is the relationship between banking of the turns on a racetrack and slope?
7.   What is the relationship between the number of threads per inch on a screw and slope?
8.   What is the relationship between the length and thickness of a wedge and slope?
      Extension topics
9.   Why are Shay Engines necessary for Cass Scenic Railroad?
10. Why were wooden wedges soaked with water once they were driven in place in marble quarries and coal mines?
11. What is the relationship between pitwalls and slope?

THE TEACHER NEEDS TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE STUDENTS DURING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET MAKING CERTAIN THAT SITES ARE APPROPRIATE.
 

Procedures: Students should be divided into cooperative groups and assigned topics for research.
Teacher should discuss with the students the objectives and goals of the assignment.
Teacher should discuss with the students the timeline for the assignment.
Teacher should discuss the grading criteria with the students and the contents of their portfolio.
Teacher should print the following hand out for the students and follow steps provided for the student.

EVERY DAY SLOPE:   HOW DOES IT APPLY?
 

Your group has been given a topic to research in the library and on the Internet.  You will now use that research to write a paper and create an oral presentation.  The following requirements are necessary for your group to receive the maximum points possible.
1. Paper is to be typed on font Times Roman and with font size 12.
2. Paper is to be double spaced and written following proper language arts skills.
3. Students must develop an outline of their paper and turn this in with the assignment.
4. The cover page of the paper is to include the topic addressed, name of the group members, date and period.
5. The paper must include a bibliography at the end of the paper, following the text with a minimum of three (3) citations of     reference.  These citations must be either APA or MLA style as directed by the instructor.
6. Paper is to include a minimum of 3 imbedded clip art or images illustrating the relationship of slope to the topic.
7. The paper is to show the practical applications of slope to the topic.
8. The paper should discuss what problems or difficulties can occur when the principle of slope is improperly applied or ignored.
9. A minimum of 2 pages must be typed text.
10. Create and present orally your research finding using visuals aids.
11. Teams will select an individual to serve as team leader.
12. Teams will create a graphic visual organizer showing each persons daily role in development of this project. The individual teams will decide the assignments of the students in their teams.
13. Each student is to daily sign below their role as the task is completed.
14. Team leader is to daily sign the graphic visual organizer verifying daily task completion for each team member.
15. Teams will create a folder for all materials from this project.  This folder is to remain in the classroom at all times.

You will have 5 class periods to complete this task.
First, students will select a team leader and assign tasks to teammates.  Students will create the visual graphic organizer showing each person's daily role.
Day one and two will be for Internet research and library research on your topic.
The remaining days will be spent with student’s working on word processors developing the paper and oral presentations.

The teacher will use the data projector to project the search engine and the teacher will guide the students through the steps of using the Internet for research.
Teacher will point out search pointers to define the search for the students.
By clicking on advanced search tips additional information is obtained.
Students will be allowed to proceed at their own rate, but must be aware of the tasks that each must complete.
The teacher will serve as a facilitator for this lesson.
Teacher will direct student to make additions to their portfolio as items are completed.
Students will peer edit their papers.
Oral presentations will be given to the class.
