Titanic, Searching a Legend

Grade Level: 6, 7
Learner Outcomes: Students will work in cooperative groups to complete a Scavenger Hunt. Each group will take the most interesting thing they discovered about the Titanic to research and create a PowerPoint Presentation for the class.
Duration of Lesson: Seven class periods.
Materials: Copies of the Scavenger Hunt.
Technology Materials: Computers with Internet access, PowerPoint software, or other presentation software.
Procedures: Divide the class into cooperative groups.  Ask students to list everything they already know about the Titanic. Since the movie "Titanic" was released in 1997 many may mention things that are part of the movie and not actually a fact. Introduce a few unusual facts about the Titanic to pique their interest. (Surf the web to find a wealth of information about the Titanic. A few of the sites are listed in the Reference section.) Use the Scavenger Hunt to start the Titanic Unit. The students will have to surf many areas of information about the Titanic as well as the time period to complete the Scavenger Hunt. Instruct each group to choose an area or topic about the Titanic that they want to explore in more detail. The group will create a PowerPoint Presentation to share this information with their class. A good tutorial to review PowerPoint was written by Susan Armstrong. Check out Beginners Central for a good Internet tutorial.
Enrichment: After the students have spent time looking at many sites to complete their Scavenger Hunts, and finished their Presentations, they can further expand their
research and presentation creations by posting their own Titanic page on the school web page. If the school does not have a web page, you may want to investigate sites that will allow you free space to post your own site.
Modifications: Teachers should be aware of special IEP needs of any student.
Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be evaluated on the completion of the Scavenger Hunt. They will also receive a grade for the PowerPoint presentation. The presentation must be clear, informative, have correct grammar and and spelling, and contain appropriate graphics,

Teachers Note: You can use any search engine that you like to find information about the Titanic. Infoseek, Excite, Yahoo, Metacrawler, Search.com and many others are good sources. There is an additional site that you may really appreciate. WebFerret is an excellent search engine that makes searching easier.
