TITLE: Geoboard Activity to find the area of various shaped polygons.
GRADE LEVEL: 6-8
SUBJECT: Math and Science
LEARNER OUTCOMES: Students will be able to find the area of various shaped polygons by dissecting the region into parts whose areas can be readily found by using formulas.
DURATION OF LESSON: 45 minute class period.
MATERIALS: Geoboards, worksheet, paper, pencil, text for formula reference, overhead head projector, overhead projector geoboard, rubber bands and calculators.
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE: Internet web site http://www.kutztown.edu/~fithian/Geometry/Activity03.html, Geometry Blaster, E-Lab activities and Geosketchpad.
TEACHERS NOTES:
PROCEDURES:
1. Students will begin by constructing polygons that will be presented on the overhead by using a overhead geoboard.
2. Students will then be shown how to dissect the polygon into parts whose area can be determined by use of a formula.
3. They can count the squares and find the area of each right triangle by surrounding it with a rectangle.
4. They will then half the area of the rectangle to find the area of the triangle.
5. Students will also be shown that the polygon can be surrounded by a rectangle and subtract the parts that are not not inside the figure.
6. Students can copy figures presented on the overhead geoboard and practice both techniques.
MODIFICATIONS: In the advanced groups students will not be permitted to use calculators. Lower level groups will work in small groups and will be able to use calculators to do all computations.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES: E-Lab activities, Geosketchpad activities to reinforce finding area. Students will also gather data and enter it into a chart (base, height, and area) to help them understand and discover formulas.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: Student data and charts will be graded for accuracy to determine a grade for the activity on a point system or using a rubric.
