Teacher notes:
- Fill out and file all AUP forms and file.
- Ansvar (derived from the Norwegian for “responsible”) is the ELEPHANT with colorful ribbons tied around his trunk and tail to help him remember his responsibilities.
- Teacher should access character counts.org to review the six pillars of character.
- Teacher should access the website national geographic.com to review animal coloring book page and additional activities.
- Acquire video camera and prepare a practice video to show the children an example of someone completing a responsible act.
Procedures:
Modifications:1. Introduce ANSVAR the Elephant and say, "He thinks before he acts and is accountable for his choices. Ansvar works hard and tries to fulfill his promises." Discuss how elephants travel in herds, elephants often like how students travel together in school. (i.e., entering the classroom, walking to recess, lunchtime) Ask students to list examples of responsible behavior. (e.g. helping others at home and in school, following directions/instructions, being prepared, sharing, etc.) Write on the board.
2. Discuss the advantages of responsible behavior while in groups. (Safety, organization, helps everyone get along, makes things easier for the group, avoid punishments, etc.) Generate with students a list of "scenes" that they could demonstrate responsibility in groups. Stage the scenes and record with video camera. Make class video on RESPONSIBILITY.
3. Have the children access the program Paint and create their own pillar of character, again after reviewing the six pillars of character.
Teacher should review any student IEP'S and 504's to make any anadaptationsd/or modifications.
