Teacher asks, "How can we show respect in the classroom?".
Ask for and offer examples (saying nice things to people, not making fun
of other people, not talking when someone else is speaking).
2. Teacher asks the children:
"Does anyone know what eyeglasses are for?"
(Offer examples such as, when people have trouble seeing things as they
really are).
"Why some people wear glasses?"
(Offer examples such as, to help them see better).
Encourage students to respond.
Teacher reads Arthur's
Eyes.
3. Teacher makes a graph with 2 columns on the chalkboard.
One column has a smile as its heading and the other column has a frown
as its heading. Teacher asks for students to name things that made Arthur
happy and things that made Arthur sad and puts them in the appropriate column.
The teacher puts an X by each thing
noted. Teacher explains that the things under the
smile were respectful and the things under the frown were not respectful
to him. The teacher asks the students to take the piece of construction paper
provided and to draw a circle on one side of the paper and put
2 eyes and a smile on it, then ask them to turn the paper over and draw a

asked to count the X's under the smile
column and write the number beside the smile on their paper, and then do
the same for those under the frown column.

'respect-acles' help me see respectful behavior. Today we are going to make
'respect-acles' to remind us to watch for and show respect."
6. Teacher passes out materials and demonstrates procedure to
make 'respect-acles' . Students make 'respect-acles'. After the task is
complete say: "Now we are going to test them. Put on your glasses and let's
see how well you can spot respect." Teacher asks that whenever someone sees
another person showing respect to please raise their hand and tell the class
what the respectful behavior is that they have seen.
7. The teacher explains that sometimes we can forget to be respectful
and need a little reminder." The teacher explains that every student is going
to take a picture of a classmate with their 'respect-acles' on, using a digital
camera and the pictures will be displayed on a classroom bulletin board to
