Learner Outcome:

      • Students will be able to name four (4) character traits of good citizenship. (i.e.. recycling,wearing seatbelts, no littering,etc).
      • Students will be able to choose examples of good citizenship.


Duration of lesson: 30 minutes


 Materials:

      • Computer
      • Internet access
      • Digital camera


Teacher notes:

      • Need to have each student complete AUP.
      • Teacher needs to read and copy the information of six pillars of character.
 
Procedures:
Discuss the term “citizenship” with the students. 
(1) What does it mean? 
(2) How do we show that we are “good citizens” (list the students’ suggestions on the board.) 
(3.) What are some things we're suppose to do to be helpful citizen? (solicit responses- list student responses on board).
Tell students that as a reminder of these responsibilities, "We are going to make HELPING HANDS.  "We will show ways we can give our country a helping hand!"
Using the "Paint" program students will draw a picture of a hand.
Have students type into the fingers (in a textbox) ways to be a good citizen and give the community a helping hand. 
Say, "Now that you have your hand drawn, think of four ways you are going to be a good citizen and give our community a helping hand.  Write one promise on each finger. Begin each promise with: "I will .......................... "
After students complete paintbrush hands, have older students take pictures and help students insert their pictures into a Power Point presentation.
 
Modifications:
Read all IEP's and all 504's of any students in the class and make the necessary modifications.


Enrichment Activities

      • Decide on a class project where students work together to help the school community (i.e.. planting flowers, cleaning outside  areas, etc.) (Citizenship/Community Worksheet (a)(b)
      • Take digital photos of students doing a service project and have students write a sentence about each.


Evaluation:

Students will be given a picture of appropriate and inappropriate descriptions of good citizenship traits. 
They will be asked to place a check mark beside the statements and/or pictures that show or describe being a good citizen on I SEE CITIZENSHIP! worksheet.
