Title: Corner a Character

Learner Outcomes:
Duration of the Lesson: 2 thirty minute sessions if a computer lab setting is available, 4 thirty minute sessions if one or two computers must be shared.
- Student will determine character traits by reading selection and identifying main character'sdescriptive features.
- Student will create graphic organizer using Microsoft Word.
- Student will read literary works of various genre.
Materials: various titles of different genre that include African- American characters, paper, pencils, a multi-media computer, printer and printer paper.

Procedures:
Modifications: This lesson should be modified to fit the student's IEP. An audio version of the story could be used and the student could give character traits aloud. This lesson does not need to be based on African-American characters.
- Read Flossie and the Fox by Patricia McKissack aloud to the class or choose from attached title list
- Identify the genre of the story as a folktale and explain why.
- Discuss the main character, Flossie.
- Ask the students to describe her. Student should use words like brave, clever and young and responsible.
- Ask the students to give examples of events in the story that demonstrate these traits.
- Explain the purpose of a graphic organizer and tell the students that they will create one on the computer using Microsoft Word. Link to this site for instructions. Graphic Organizer
Enrichment Activities: Students could illustrate the character. The student could watch a video version of the story or they could attach different character traits to the character and then write an alternative ending.
Evaluation/Assessment: An evaluation would be made by the teacher after a review of the graphic organizer. The graphic organizer should be correctly created using Microsoft Word and which should list one of the story's character's and four of the character traits that would be attributed to them.
