Description: Lights, Camera, Action spotlights African-Americans throughout history and their struggles, successes, and achievements using colorful literature, both fiction and non-fiction.
Learner Outcomes:
Lesson 1:
- Student will determine character traits by reading selection and identifying main character'sdescriptive features.
- Student will create graphic organizer using Microsoft Word.
- Student will read literary works of different genre.
Lesson 2:
- The students will be able to understand that African-Americans were not allowed to do the same things as caucasians.
- The students will be able to gain a knowledge of Ruby Bridges and her contribution to our society.
- The students will be able to determine how they are alike and different from their classmates.
- The students will be able to locate the city and state of where Ruby Bridges went to school.
- The students will compare their lives to that of Ruby Bridges.
- The students will contribute to making a class story map for the book The Story of Ruby Bridges.
Lesson 3:
- The students will read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt and summarize the sequence of events in the story.
- The students will analyze and discuss quilt patterns used as maps on the Underground Railroad.
- The students will create a quilt square using geometrical shapes and name the square.
- The students will create a quilt square on a 5x5 inch piece of paper that represents them.
- The students will combine all of the quilt squares to create a class quilt.
Lesson 4:
- Students will learn what an autobiography is by using the Internet website.
- Students will read a portion of an on-line electronic edition of an autobiography.
- Students will write a brief autobiography using Microsoft Word.
Lesson 5:
- The students will read Dinner at Aunt Connie's House and comprehend information about famous African-American women by summarizing.
- The students will research a famous African-American woman using the Internet or encyclopedias.
- The students will summarize and write a brief biographical sketch.
- The students will use Microsoft Word to type the biographical sketch.
