Description:
Foolin' with Fairy Tales illustrates the beginnings of fairy tales and their long standing
popularity among people of all ages. Traditional and contemporary versions will be
explored and is sure to be fun for all.

Learner Outcomes:

Lesson 1:

Students will understand the history of folktales and the sub-genre fairy tales.
Students will read samples of each type both on-line and from a hard copy or hear stories of both type read aloud.
Students will learn the criteria of folktales.
Students will compose original tale using household items as story starters.

Lesson 2:

Students will prepare an original folk tale based on regional or historical figure
Students will record their tale on computer using Microsoft Powerpoint
Students will provide visual background for their tale using Powerpoint
Students will present their tales to the class

Lesson 3:

The students will become familiar with the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears as they have the story read aloud to them and discussed.
The students will understand the importance of not going into a strangers house through the discussion of Goldilocks actions and reading of this fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The students will compare Goldilocks and the Three Bears with the knowledge they have of real bears using a Venn Diagram.
The students will create masks or stick puppets to retell the story in their own words using their prior knowledge and experience with the story for a classroom production.
The students will create patterns, sort, and complete simple addition/subtraction story problems using teddy bear counters.

Lesson 4:

The students will be able to identify several fairy-tale/folktale characteristics found through the use of literature and discussions.
The students will be able to retell the story Little Red Riding Hood in their own words including the characters, setting, and plot.
The students will be able to use all their senses to identify smells, tastes, hearing, and seeing of different objects and activities.
The students will be able to estimate by using educated guesses to predict how many cookies are in the container.
The students will graph their coats according to whether they have a hood attached to it or not.
The students will be the illustrators in making a class book of Little Red Riding Hood.

Lesson 5:

The students will read three versions of The Three Little Pigs and compare and contrast the story elements of each by using story pies.
The students will create a floor plan for a home and present their blue prints to the class.
The students will construct houses for the three pigs using various materials and testing the strength of each structure.
The students will work cooperatively to create story pies showing story sequence for each version of The Three Little Pigs .

Lesson 6:

The student will compare and contrast with a Venn diagram different versions of fairy tales by using various stories.
The student will create a graphic organizer showing story parts of a fairy tale and creating story parts of their own fractured fairy tale.
The student will use the Writing Process to create a beginning, middle, and end of their own version of a fairy tale.
The student will use Microsoft Word to make their final copy of their fractured fairy tale to present to the class.
