Title:  Tomb of the Unknowns 

Grades: 6,7, and 8

Subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, and Technology

Learner Outcomes: 1)  To use reference materials, including
                                       the Internet, to gather information
                                  2)  To identify the historical significance of
                                       the Tomb of the Unknowns
                                  3)  To write an essay on information
                                       gathered                                                       Tomb of the Unknowns

Time Frame:   Assignment due one week after class discussion

Materials:    Reference materials

Technology:  Internet, video, VCR

Teacher Notes:  While visiting Arlington Cemetery our school participates in a Wreath Laying
                            Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.  Arrangements for this activity are
                            scheduled one year in advance with the U.S. Army.  Four students are chosen
                            to represent our school  in ceremony to honor the Unknowns of WW1, WW2,
                            Korea and Vietnam.

Procedures:  Students will write a short, one to two page, essay on the topic  'Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.'  Areas to be covered include brief history of cemetery
and ceremonies and why the student would like to participate.

Modifications:  Assignments may be graded differently for special
    needs students as indicated per student.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Papers will be turned in to history teacher
    and coded so that student name will not appear on paper.  Essays
    will be ranked by 'content' by each of the 7th and 8th grade
    teachers and principal.  Each evaluator will select their top 5
    papers.  Record results on tally sheet, shuffle papers, then pass
    Wreath Ceremony                  on to next teacher for scoring.  The student writers of the four
                                           papers receiving the four highest point totals will represent the school.
