Title:  You Be the Tour Guide

Grades:  6, 7, and 8

Subjects:  Social Studies, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes: 1) To use reference materials, including
                                      the Internet, to gather information.
                                  2) To use a trip itinerary.
                                  3) To recall important facts about the
                                      sites in an oral report.

Time Frame:   Five class periods

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Materials:  DC trip file,  encyclopedia, on-line encyclopedia, poster board and markers

Technology:  Internet, CD's, videos 

Teacher Notes:

• Use trip itinerary to get list of sites and activities.  Assign a site or activity to each student
• Best researchers should get the more obscure sites                                                                                     Charles Yeager's plane
• If students would like activities/sites added to the itinerary, have them research and report on them for possible inclusion to the trip
• Students may be called upon to give information on the site while actually on the trip
• Oral reports will include a poster board illustration
• Posters will later be displayed in the Jr. high hallways

• Students will prepare a report (5-10 minutes) for class presentation on assigned DC topic.  Best researchers will enjoy working with the more obscure topics.
• Use itinerary for topics.
• Information in report should incorporate the following:  when built, why built, whom honored, cost to build, history, size, cost to visit, operating hours, tours??
• The above information should be summarized on the poster for display in the school

Modifications: Special needs students will be given the sites that are easier to find.

Enrichment Activities: Students will be tour guides of each reported site on actual trip.
