Title:                   The Great Gatsby:  a Vocabulary Study

Grade Level:              Grade Eleven

Subject:                      English Language Arts, Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:    The students will be able to use the vocabulary from The Great Gatsby enabling them to comprehend the story more clearly

Duration of lesson:       One 50 minute session

Materials:                    Students need writing utensils and paper, computer, internet access

Technology Tools/Courseware:    Internet dictionary, computer, internet access, word-processing software

Teacher Notes:            Give the students a teacher generated vocabulary list or use a list from a professionally prepared study unit on the novel as given in Reference section below.

Procedures:                  1.  Instruct students in using an Internet dictionary in defining the words
                                      2.  Have the students define their list and word process their definitions

Modifications:                See Individual Education Plans for any modification that may be necessary for individual students

Enrichment:                   Have a creative writing assignment in which the students use the vocabulary words correctly in an essay, mini story, or a poem.

Evaluation/Assessment:  The evaluation could take the form of a quiz, a writing assignment, or a conversational recognition assessment
