Learner Outcomes:
1. Students will identify
images as they investigate the novel.
2. Students will analyze
the author's style by examining the use of imagery in the novel.
3. Students will create
a literary essay.
Duration of the Lesson: Three 55 minute sessions
Materials: The Great Gatsby (text), highlighter, pen, notebook paper, word processing program (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, etc.)
Technology Tools: "Recurring Images
in The Great Gatsby " (Power Point presentation software),
computer, data projector
Teacher Notes: 1. Students have completed the first
reading of the novel.
2. Students have had experience in expository writing.
3. Students have had instruction in using a word processing program.
Procedures:
1. The teacher presents "Recurring Images in The Great Gatsby."
2. Students view the presentation, taking notes on key points when
directed.
3. Following the presentation, the teacher reviews key points on
color, eyes
and vision, wasteland, sunlight and shadow, death, and time.
4. Students select one image and trace its use throughout the novel.
5. Students will create and word process an essay which analyzes
the use of one
recurring image (author's style), using examples from throughout
the text.
Modifications: The teacher should consult the Instructional Education Plan for students with exceptions. All students will receive individual instruction as needed. An audio tape of the novel is available for students who have reading difficulties.
Enrichment Activity: Students may research color symbolism, using the Internet resource: color symbolism
Evaluation/Assessment: Students' essays will be evaluated to determine their understanding of the author's style.
