Title: Introduction to Forecasting
Grade Level: K – 4
Subjects: Language Arts, Science, Math
Learner Outcomes:
1. The students will
access weather links on the Internet.
2. The students will
predict weather based on temperature and precipitation.
3. The students will
complete endings for weather folklore sayings.
4. The students will
write or tell three duties of a meteorologist.
Duration of Lesson: two - 30 minute periods
Materials:
1. A
worksheet with 2 thermometers on it to compare predicted and
actual temperatures.
Technology Tool/Courseware:
1. Computer with Internet
capability
2. PowerPoint
Presentation
Teacher Notes:
1. The teacher will need
to adapt each part of this lesson to the age
and ability of the students.
2. Obtain a signed
AUP, if required.
Procedures:
1. Access the AccuWeather
and/or Farmer’s Almanac to determine
the temperature
and general weather conditions for your area.
2. Ask students to predict
the next day’s forecast, based on the projected temperature and precipitation
amount. When tomorrow comes have students compare their prediction
to the actual one. (Worksheet)
3. Provide students with
the first part of 5 weather proverbs (Powerpoint)
for them to complete. Discuss.
4. Arrange for a meteorologist
to speak to your students. If that is not possible, access the local
television station web page. example: WTRF

Modification:
1. Older students may
create a graph in Excel, then record and plot actual temperature and/or
precipitation amounts for one week.
Enrichment:
1. Students may compare
the temperature of their state to other states via the Internet.
2. Using AccuWeather
and/or Farmer’s Almanac students
my graph the temperature of their area for one week or one month.
3. Visit a radio/TV station
to observe their weather equipment.
Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Show students
a picture and have them write or tell a weather forecast that correlates
with the picture.
2. Students will write
a paragraph or state a list that includes three duties of a meteorologist
utilizing Creative
Writer.
