Lesson 3

Title: The Whisper/Roar of the Wind

Grade Level: K – 4

Subject: Science, Art, Language Arts, Physical Education

Learner Outcomes:
    1.  The students will demonstrate that wind moves things.
    2. The students will recognize that wind can be beneficial or detrimental.
    3. The students will determine wind direction.

Duration on Lesson:  45 minutes

Materials:
         bubbles & blowers        5 speeds of wind worksheet
         compass
         flag
         chalk

Technology Tool/Courseware:
  1. Computer with Internet capability

Teacher Notes:
1. The teacher will need to adapt each part of this lesson to the age and ability of the students.
2. Obtain a signed AUP, if required.

Procedures:
    1. Ask students what evidence there is that wind exists and where it originates.
    2. Watch the Wind video.
    3. Using purchased bubbles or homemade ones, have students experiment with bubbles and the wind.
    4. Construct pinwheels.
    5. Create a list of ways wind helps and harms us.
    6. List 5 speeds of wind on board and describe their characteristics.  Take students outside or to a large area and have them use their bodies to interpret the different wind speeds.
    7. Draw a circle on sidewalk.  Use a compass to determine N, S, E, W.  Have students determine wind direction by holding a flag.  Check wind direction at 3 different times of day.
     8.  Read wind folklore to students and discuss their meaning. (PowerPoint)

Modifications:
    1. Younger students may need to make simple fish kites rather than pinwheels.

Enrichment Activities:
    1. Construct an anemometer, wind vane, or sailboat.
    2. Observe windmills in action.

Evaluation/Assessment:
    1. Students will state/write 1 positive and 1 negative effect of the wind.
    2. Students will create a picture utilizing Paint, or other publishing software, which involves wind and label it positive or negative wind.
    3. Observing the flag waving in the wind, the students will state the wind direction.
