Lesson 4

Title:  Weather Instruments

Grade Levels:  K-4

Learner Outcomes:
1. List instruments to measure weather.
2. Use one instrument over a period of time.
3. Take a Powerpoint post-test on weather instruments.

Duration of Lesson:  One 45 minute session

Materials:
1. Hand-made or purchased weather instrument.
2. Book: Weather – Eyewitness Books

Technology Tools/Courseware:
1. Computer
2. Projection Device
3. Powerpoint presentations

Teacher Notes:
1. Obtain signed AUP, if required.

Procedures:
1. List instruments that are used to make weather forecasts.
2. Read: Weather pp. 12, 22, 42, and 62.
3. Visit Internet sites that show weather instruments.
4. Choose an instrument and tell how you would use it.
5. Take a powerpoint post-test on weather instruments.
6. Discuss a powerpoint presentation on weather folklore.

Modifications:
1. Extend to several days if interest is evident.
2. Adapt the lesson to the age and ability of the students.

Enrichment Activities:
1. Construct a weather instrument.
2. Keep track of the weather and the barometric pressure for three weeks.

Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Students will take a post-test on weather instruments.
