Teacher Notes:
1. The teacher will need
to adapt each part of this lesson to the age
and ability of the students.
2. Obtain
a signed AUP, if required.
Procedures:
1. Explain the panel
board of an Automated Weather System (AWS).
Ask them to locate information on it.
2. Access the AccuWeather
and/or Farmer’s Almanac to determine
the temperature and general weather conditions
for your area for the next five days. Have student use weather symbols
and the temperature to depict the 5-day forecast on a worksheet.
3. Discuss forecasting
folklore from the past using PowerPoint.
4. View a video of your

5. Working in pairs or
small groups, have students write a broadcast
and rehearse it in front of a large USA
map. Then videotape each broadcast and play them on the school wide
broadcast system. Time Limit is 2 minutes.
Modifications:
1. If you do not have
access to an Automated Weather System, the
same information may be obtained from a
weather link site.
2. If a school wide broadcast
system is not available, make the video
tape available for others to view.
3. You may want to give
younger students a weather
report form.
Enrichment:
1. If there is access
to an AWS manual, teachers could utilize those lessons. It is a ready-made
unit.
2. Visit a radio/TV station
to observe their weather equipment.
3. Students could write
and present entire news broadcast that covers weather, school news, lunch
menu (point out Health benefits), sports, interviews, and commercials.
Evaluation/Assessment:
1. The teacher will assess
the completed videos. More experienced students may be assessed using
a rubric.
