Lesson 5

Title:  Beaming Students Broadcast

Grade Level: K – 4

Subject:  Language Arts, Science, Health, Math

Learner Outcomes:
    1. The students will state solicited information from the control panel of an Automated Weather System.
    2. The students will write weather forecasts and deliver them orally.

Duration of Lesson:  two – 45 minute lessons

Materials:
    1. A large USA wall map
    2. Video of a weather person giving a forecast

Technology Tool/Courseware:
    1. Automated Weather System
    2. Digital camera
    3. Video camera
    4. A broadcast system
    5. PowerPoint Presentation

Teacher Notes:
    1. The teacher will need to adapt each part of this lesson to the age
and ability of the students.
     2.  Obtain a signed AUP, if required.

Procedures:
    1. Explain the panel board of an Automated Weather System (AWS).
Ask them to locate information on it.
    2. Access the AccuWeather and/or Farmer’s Almanac to determine
the temperature and general weather conditions for your area for the next five days.  Have student use weather symbols and the temperature to depict the 5-day forecast on a worksheet.
    3.  Discuss forecasting folklore from the past using PowerPoint.
    4. View a video of your local broadcast meteorologist giving a weather
report.
    5. Working in pairs or small groups, have students write a broadcast
and rehearse it in front of a large USA map.  Then videotape each broadcast and play them on the school wide broadcast system.  Time Limit is 2 minutes.

Modifications:
    1. If you do not have access to an Automated Weather System, the
same information may be obtained from a weather link site.
    2. If a school wide broadcast system is not available, make the video
tape available for others to view.
    3. You may want to give younger students a weather report form.

Enrichment:
    1. If there is access to an AWS manual, teachers could utilize those lessons.  It is a ready-made unit.
    2. Visit a radio/TV station to observe their weather equipment.
    3. Students could write and present entire news broadcast that covers weather, school news, lunch menu (point out Health benefits), sports, interviews, and commercials.

Evaluation/Assessment:
    1. The teacher will assess the completed videos.  More experienced students may be assessed using a rubric.
