TECHNOLOGY TOOLS/COURSEWARE
1. The teacher will need to have a copy of Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg and other versions of Johnny Appleseed to compare.
2. The teacher needs to pre-read the various versions to know how they are alike and different.
3. Make a list of vocabulary words from the story to use as spelling words for the week.
Procedure:
Introduce Steven Kellogg's "Johnny Appleseed."
Use Vocabulary
Cards to introduce words.
Picture walk through book to make predictions.
Record student predictions on a class chart.
Read orally to students stopping to ask questions.
Review predictions for accuracy.
Students can work in small groups to complete crossword
puzzle, Roll & Read Vocabulary Review, and visit Steven Kellogg web sites.
Rotate students until all activities have been completed by each student
Modifications:
Students who need help with reading may need to
work in
pairs on the internet sites. Follow any IEP
instructions for individual students.
Enrichment
Activities:
Have students tape record the story to practice
reading for fluency and expression.
Have students read different versions of Johnny
Appleseed to compare and contrast using a Venn Diagram.
Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be evaluated by teacher observation, class participation, and completed Venn Diagrams and worksheets.
