Grade Level: Second and Third Grade
Subjects:
English/Language Arts/Math
Learner Outcomes
Students will be able to record and interpret data
from individual graphs
they construct
Students will estimate the number of seeds found
in an apple
Students will use tally marks to compile information
for their graphs
Students will use prediction and estimation to
estimate the number of
seeds in an apple
Students will use the words more and fewer to compare
the number of seeds
Duration
of Lesson: Approximately 60 minutes
Materials
Technology
Tools/Courseware
1. Teachers will need to wash apples for tasting.
2. Teacher or adult volunteers need to cut the apples so students can remove the seeds.
Procedures:
Pose the question, " Which apple do you choose?
Red? Green? Yellow?"
Students will use a post-it note to record their
choice.
On the chalkboard, record with tally marks the students'
choices.
The students will complete graphs using colors to
correspond with apple
choices (red, yellow, green).
The students will complete 4 sentences to interpret
results of the
graph ( more students chose red than yellow or 10 students chose red and
yellow or there are more students who liked green than yellow, etc.)
Seed Counting Activity
Read the story House with a Star.
Give each student an apple.
Discuss if seeds are contained inside each apple.
Have each student predict how many seeds they will
find inside.
Teacher or adult helper should cut apples to expose
seeds and allow students to count and record the number they found.
Students will find the difference of their predictions
and actual count using
a number sentence to show their answer.
Students will use the terms more and fewer to write
a sentence about their
predictions.
Modifications:
Students who need help with reading may need to work
in
pairs on the internet sites. Follow
any IEP instructions for individual students.
Enrichment
Activities:
Create patterns using cut apples and red, yellow and green paint. The students will choose an AB, ABBA, ABC,etc pattern. They will stamp their pattern. They can exchange patterns with a class partner to copy and extend the patterns.
Teach fractions by making apple pizza.
Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be evaluated by teacher observation, class participation, construction of graphs and interpretations and completed worksheets.
