Title:  Apple Writing

Grade Level:   Second and Third Grade

    Learner Outcomes

Students will use the writing process to create their own Tall Tales

Students will use dictionaries, spelling check, and thesaurus on Microsoft Word to edit, write, and publish their stories
Students will use proper keyboarding techniques when using the word processor

  Students will share their completed stories
 

Duration of Lesson:   Approximately 40 minutes/5 days

Teacher Notes:
1.  The teacher will need to have a copy of Johnny Appleseed  by Steven Kellogg and other versions of Johnny Appleseed to compare.
2. Run off copies of cover for Apple Shape Book.
3. Build background by inviting a resource person dressed as Johnny Appleseed to share his adventures as an early pioneer.

Procedures:

DAY ONE
Invite Johnny Appleseed to visit the class and tell of his life and adventures as an early pioneer.
DAY TWO - FIVE
Students will be writing a descriptive narrative that will depict their personal adventure as a pioneer character traveling and planting seeds to a destination of their choice.
Follow the Steps of the Writing Process to write and publish a creative story.
The students will work daily at their own pace  until all stories are completed.
Devise a system or bulletin board whereby each student can be tracked as to where they are in the writing process (use apples, seeds, etc. for each step).
Use the digital camera to take pictures of each student with a pot on their head and a bag for seeds to be included in the story for publication.

 

Modifications: 

Students who need help with reading may need to work in pairs on the internet sites.  Follow any IEP instructions for individual students.

Enrichment Activities:

Students could go to other classrooms to share their stories.
Compile  individual stories to publish class book. These can be placed in the  classroom library.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Students will be evaluated by teacher observation, class participation, and writing rubric.
