of Lesson: Approximately 60 minutes
Materials
Technology Tools/Courseware:
1. The teacher will need to give students plastic knives to use when cutting their fruit.
2. Teacher should precut fruit for the salad and those for examining by students.
Procedures:
Use a model, chart or the basal health book to
introduce the food pyramid.
Discuss and research the importance of fruit in
daily food consumption.
Use magazines and food ads to have students locate
pictures of food to complete a class food pyramid.
Use recipe to make fruit salad for a nutritious
snack.
Students will bring a favorite recipe to record
on a recipe card
that will be published in a class booklet.
Students will construct a class graph that shows
favorite fruits of their class.
FRUIT SALAD RECIPE
Cut fresh fruit into bite size pieces and place in a large bowl.
Step 2
Drain canned fruits and add to the bowl.
Step 3
Add 2 cups mini marshmallows.
Step 4
Add a sprinkling of cinnamon.
Mix well.
Step 5
Enjoy!!
Modifications: Check students records for dietary restrictions and/or allergies. Students who need help with reading may need to work in pairs on the internet sites. Follow any IEP instructions for individual students.
Enrichment Activities: Ask students to bring favorite apple recipes from home and publish a class cookbook. Share with parents/guardians, grandparents, and other interested adults. Apple Recipes
Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be evaluated by teacher observation, class participation, construction and interpretation of graphs and food pyramid.
