Grade Levels: 9

Subject(s): English, Health

Learner Outcomes:

Duration of Lesson: 90 minutes

Materials: Over head projector, note card transparency, transparency markers, sample research resources and research outline handout

Technology Tools/Courseware: Overhead projector

Teacher Notes:

This is an introductory lesson designed to engage the students in the Hooked on Health Get ACTI VE community and school wellness project. The first day will be spent in discussion with students about physical and mental wellness and the definitions of each. The discussion will also focus on identifying sites within the county that provide opportunities for citizens to exercise, visit and interact. At a later date, guest speakers will visit classes to discuss their personal fitness plans. Students will brainstorm a list of questions today, so they can be ready for interaction with speakers.

Procedures:

40 minutes

Discussion of what students think to be the components of a Life Long Fitness Plan such as exercise, mental wellness, physical wellness, stress management and time management. A component of the students’ Life Long Fitness Plan report will require that they keep a Physical Fitness Log/Journal that details their physical activities in terms of type and number of hours. During session two of this unit, students will brainstorm ideas for the Physical Fitness Log/Journal and then develop the format. Students will be required to turn information from their Physical Fitness Log/Journals into a bar graph as a component of the final report.

As part of the discussion, students and teacher will identify various sites in the county that provide citizens opportunities for physical exercise and note these on a map of the area. Discuss developing a brochure for the community that identifies these sites and what is available; this discussion will also include the idea of using our Life Long Fitness Plan research to develop a proposal to present to the County Commission to develop potential fitness opportunities within the county.

10 minutes

Students will generate a list of questions to ask guest speakers.

15 minutes

Discussion of Life Long Fitness Plan Report requirements' sheet to solicit student suggestions for additions and deletions. (A final hard copy will be given to students at the beginning of session three.)

25 minutes

Students use over head and sample research materials to model note taking and note card citation formats.

Modifications: Made at teacher's discretion following IEP guidelines

Enrichment Activities:

Students will visit various sites such as the O. K. Wilfong Fitness Trail, the Ivydale Hill Trail, the Annex Trail, Cemetery Hill, the CCHS weight room, etc. and develop reports to present to the class. Report format will be determined by presenters; however, students will be encouraged to use visuals and incorporate technology into their presentations.
