Grade Level: 9
Subject: Study Skills, Health
Learner Outcomes:
Materials: Library Access, Bibliography handout (see end of lesson)
TechnologyTools/Courseware:Internet access, word processing
Teacher Notes:
This library experience can be as generic as needed, or specifically tailored to a teachers subject assignment. To make every minute of library time count, the librarian should guide the students toward print and non-printed materials of the specific subject requested. For example, subject related websites could be bookmarked ahead of time to shorten internet down time, also specific reference books or dictionaries could be examined instead of general reference books. Remember to reserve the library/media center well in advance, at least two days (block scheduling) or approximately 3 hours
Procedures:
Day 1
30 minutes
Students will be brought into the library. The librarian will introduce the students to the resources available for their use during the research period. These resources should include at least the card catalog, readers guide and periodicals, reference section, and any relevant electronic media (eg internet, database). This introduction should encompass resource location as well as hands on practice in using them. Approx. 30 min. LA9.73, LA9.748,LA9.75,
30 minutes
During the examination of resource materials, the librarian should relate to students how to use books effectively and efficiently. The table of contents and the index of each book should be discussed as a selection device for relevant resource materials. Also, discuss how to recognize if your research topic is too narrow or broad.LA9.774 Direct students attention to information needed for correct bibliographical notations. See end of lesson plan for handout.
30 minutes
Lastly, the librarian will discuss the importance of giving credit where credit is due, plagiarism, and the information needed for bibliography, using the handout on page 3, (or self-made), and how to keep track of URL when researching the internet (copy and paste URL addresses into a word document).LA9.82
Day 2
15 minutes
Students will return to the library with specific topics in mind to research. The librarian will briefly review previous discussion on available resources.
60 minutes
Students should be dismissed to begin research relevant to their individual topics. The librarian should be in the midst of the students guiding those in need and visibly available for questions.

Documenting Sources From the Web
Handout
http://www.mla.org/set_stl.htm
In parenthetical references in the text, works on the World Wide Web are cited just like printed works. For any type of source, you must include information in your text that directs readers to the correct entry in the works-cited list (see the MLA Handbook, sec. 5.2). Web documents generally do not have fixed page numbers or any kind of section numbering. If your source lacks numbering, you have to omit numbers from your parenthetical references. If your source includes fixed page numbers or section numbering (such as numbering of paragraphs), cite the relevant numbers. Give the appropriate abbreviation before the numbers: "(Moulthrop, pars. 19-20)." (Pars. is the abbreviation for paragraphs. Common abbreviations are listed in the MLA Handbook, sec. 6.4.) For a document on the Web, the page numbers of a printout should normally not be cited, because the pagination may vary in different printouts.
