SURVIVING IN WINDOWS 98

Lesson 1 - Get Ready! Get Set! Go!

Learner Outcomes:

Students will know how to start and shut down Windows 98.
Students will be able to identify the parts of the Windows Desktop.
Students will be able to use the mouse efficiently.

Duration of Lesson: One 50-Minute Class Period

Materials:

"Booting and Shutting Down Windows" handout

Technology Tools/Courseware:

Computer with Windows 98 operating system and Internet access
Microsoft Word 2000
Netscape Communicator

Teacher Notes:

Students must have a signed Technology Acceptable Use form on file.
Pass out "Booting and Shutting Down Windows" handout prior to students starting computers.

Procedures:

1.)    Before students start computers, hand out and discuss the "Booting and Shutting Down Windows"
        handout. Make sure to emphasize the importance of the "shutting down" step.
2.)    Have students start computers and explain any log-on instructions.
3.)    Tell the students how to double-click on the Netscape Communicator icon to access the Internet.
4.)    In the "Location" box, have students type the URL for The Solution Site (http://www.thesolutionsite.com)
        and find the unit called Surviving in Windows 98. Then select "Lesson 1 - Get Ready! Get Set! Go!"
5.)    Have students follow the instructions and activities in Lesson 1.

Modifications:

Student IEPs will determine lesson modifications.
Advanced students will help students who are experiencing difficulties.

Enrichment Activities:

Students will access the Internet site "http://www.visionquestit.com/html/webucate/tips/tenways.htm" and list the Ten Ways to Make Windows 98 Run Better and give a brief description of each one.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Successful completion of the lesson activities.
Observed competence in using the mouse.
