online.

After researching a career on the Internet,
students will be able to type a two page summary of their career research
using a word processing program.

Students will prepare and deliver a 2-4 minute
oral presentation of one occupation using a minimum of four sources, two
of which must be found on the Internet.

Students will identify and interview two individuals
in a chosen occupation as providers of information and/or mentors.
These interviews can be done online, in person or by phone.
TIME FRAME:

Assignment #!: One 50 minute class period

Assignment #2: One to two 50 minute class
periods

Assignment #3: One 50 minute class period
to interview online plus outside of class time to interview one person
in their career from the community

Assignment #4: Two 50 minute classes to

TEACHER NOTES:

The Object of this lesson is to help sophomores
explore the world of work and more specifically choose their career major.
-
Before beginning this lesson, the school counselor
should be invited to the class to review the Career Clusters from which
the students chose their cluster in the 8th grade. The counselor
should initiate a discussion on the importance of considering aptitude,
interest and personality before choosing a career. The counselor
can then introduce the specific majors under each Cluster.
PROCEDURES:

After completing the Career Questionnaire, the
students will research a career on the Internet.Suggested
sites: Career
Profiles, Career
Search, Occupational
Outlook Handbook. They can choose a career suggested at
the conclusion of the Career Questionnaire, or they can choose another
career in which they are interested. As the students are doing their
research, they will complete a Career
Outline.
The Teacher can also have books and pamphlets on careers available.
ASSIGNMENT
#3:

Students will interview
two people in their chosen career as possible resources, mentors using
the Career Outline questions as the Interview Format.
ASSIGNMENT
#4:

After their research is complete, the students
will use a computer to type a two page paper about their career,
They must have a minimum of four sources, two of which must be on the Internet.
Their interviews will count as one source. Students are to be told
that writing style, spelling, punctuation and grammar will be checked.

The students will present
their research to the class by giving a 2-4 minute oral report about their
career which can be given in a Power Point presentation. Remind students
that eye contact and clarity of speech are important.
MODIFICATIONS:

All students' IEP's must be followed,

Students who are slow readers may need help
completing the Career Questionnaire. Questions can be read aloud.

Peer tutors can be assigned if students are
having trouble navigating the net and/or writing their paper.
ENRICHMENT:
-
Students will participate in a job shadowing
or other work based learning experience in their chosen career. Each
high school in West Virginia has a work based learning experience coordinator.
This activity should be coordinated through and documented by her in order
for students to receive credit toward this graduation requirement.
EVALUATIONS/ASSESSMENT:

Assignment #!: At
the end of the class period, students will have completed the online Career
Questionnaire and will have chosen which career they will research.
100 points.

Assignment #2: Each
question on the Career Outline is worth 10 points for a total of 100 points.

Assignment #3: Each
Interview format sheet is worth 50 points.
