The students will be able to
predict the sounds the animals make in the book Polar
Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
The students will be able to identify
sounds of common objects and determine if they are loud or soft.
The students will match animal name cards
to animal pictures.
The students will predict the outcome
of mixing different colors of food coloring.
Duration of Lesson: Three days, approximately
45 minutes each lesson

Procedures for Day 1:
- Display pictures of animals found in the
book Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Eric Carle
- Have students identify names of the animals.
- Have students match animal name cards
with pictures of animals in the book.
- Show word cards of animal sounds.
- Have students repeat animal sounds.
- Have students predict the animal that
goes with each sound.
- Read aloud the book Polar Bear, Polar
Bear, What Do You Hear? by Eric Carle.
- Have students match animal sound cards
to pictures of animals in the book.
- During learning center time students
will access bear websites on the internet: site no. 1 www.americanbear.org and
site no. 2 www.bear.org
- During center time students will match
animal sound cards to animal name cards.
Procedures for Day 2:
- Introduce concept of loud and soft sounds.
- Clap hands loudly.
- Have students identify whether sound
is loud or soft
- Rub hands together.
- Have students identify whether sound
is loud or soft
- Play first selection on audio tape of
common sounds.
- Have students identify sound.
- Have students identify sound as loud
or soft.
- Play remaining selections.
- Students will identify the sounds one
at a time by writing the name of the object on the table
and identifying the sound as loud or soft in the appropriate column with
a check mark.
Procedures for Day 3:
- Students will follow teacher directions
of mixing food coloring in plastic bear bottles according to the Polar Bear,
Polar Bear story and predict the outcome of the color mixtures.

Bear activity sheet for teacher to recite to students.
Modifications:
- Provide individual time with students
who cannot distinguish loudness and softness in sounds.
- Assist individual students with food
coloring activities as necessary.
- Follow I.E.P. goals and objectives for
students.
Enrichment Activities:
- Day 1: Students will visit the
literacy center and make a booklet of various animals from their own drawings
or from pictures they cut out from magazines. Students will then visit
the listening center and tape record animal sounds to accompany their animal
booklet.
- Day 2: A veterinarian will visit
the classroom and bring live animals for display and discussion.
- Day 3: Students will participate
in extension activity from Polar Bear, Polar Bear
color mixture activity sheet. Students will experiment with mixing
food coloring in individual egg cartons and predict color mixture outcomes.
Evaluation/Assessment:
- The students will be assessed on their
ability to distinguish the difference between loud and soft sounds.
The data will be collected from the student listening activity sheet from
day 2. Students will demonstrate mastery by achieving 4 out of 5 correct
responses each for loud and soft sounds.
