Title: The Renaissance, Background

Learner Outcomes:

identify factors which led to the period of the Renaissance
identify where the Renaissance began and explain why it began there
relate the movement called humanism to the Renaissance
discuss how Renaissance ideas spread across Europe
describe how the Renaissance in England differed from the Renaissance in other parts of Europe

Duration of Lesson: one block period

Materials: textbook, map of Europe, transparencies, slides of Renaissance art

Technology: overhead projector, slide projector, computer lab with internet access, Microsoft Work program

Teacher Notes:

Internet access permission form on file for each student.
Reserve computer lab
Secure slides of Renaissance are from the art teacher.
Teacher may want to design a power point program for introduction material.
Co-teaching with English and Science teacher

Procedures:

Use power point presentation and transparencies to introduce background material on the Renaissance. Students will take notes.
Using a map of Europe students will fill in important countries and cities of the Renaissance.
In small groups have student create simple charts showing differences in the Renaissance in England and elsewhere in Europe
Have students describe in a well written paragraph a "Renaissance man" of today.
Students will view slides and then use resource material try to identify the varies artists.

Modifications:
Have students create a time line of important events discussed in class.
Students my listen to an audio tape which accompanies the textbook.

Enrichment Activities:
    Have students work with a partner to prepare and present a profile of a Renaissance writer or artist. Their profiles will require outside research.
    Secure pictures from the Internet of examples of Renaissance art and arrange on poster board. Label each artist's name and date.
    Watch parts of the video: Art of the Western World

Evaluation:
testing, student group participation, and an essay typed on Microsoft Word
