TITLE: History of Chemistry; The Alchemists

Grade Levels: 10, 11, 12

Subjects: Coordinated Science, Chemistry, English, and History

Learner Outcomes:

The learner will use internet resources to research role of Alchemists in the development of modern Scientific principals.
The learner will compare modern laboratory equipment to that used by Alchemists.
The learner will use open ended research methods to become familiar with famous Scientists involved in the development of modern Scientific theories.

Duration of Lesson: Two 90 minute class periods plus one week outside of class
for research and writing assignment.

Materials:

Worksheet concerning Alchemist's apparatus.
Ordinary Chemistry or Science Laboratory equipment.
Various research tools (encyclopedia and other reference materials).

Technology: Computers with internet access.

Teacher Notes:

Review practices for safe handling of laboratory equipment.
Secure internet permission forms for each student.
Reserve library and computer lab.

Procedures:
Expose students to common laboratory apparatus. Students will then compare this apparatus to that used by the Alchemists. Students will also complete a short research paper on an important contributor from the Renaissance era to the development of modern Chemistry.

Modifications: None.

Enrichment Activities:
The research assignment should be tailored to the abilities of the particular class. The depth of the assignment can be adjusted to meet specific goals of the instructor.

Evaluation/Assessment: Worksheets should be collected and graded. Also,
grades should be assessed to the written assignments.
