Title:  How Do You Get to School?
 

Grade Levels:  3-4
 

Subjects:  Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Art
 

Learner Outcomes:

  Students will identify how they get to school.
  Students will create a class pictograph.
  Students will demonstrate graph making skills.
  Students will compare and contrast individual graphs.


Duration of Lesson:

2 - 45 minute sessions
 

Materials:

  Book--This Is the Way We Go to School
  Bulletin Board:  Caption--"How Do You Get to School", Words--
     Walk, Car, Bus #,  cutouts -- Bus, car, shoe
  Markers, crayons, and colored pencils


Technology Tools/Courseware:

  Excel
Tom Snyder Graph Club
  Presentation TV


Teacher Notes:

  Order bulletin board sets--Off to School, Big Happy School Bus,
     Wheels on the Bus.
  Prepare pictograph bulletin board--
Apply title to top and captions to bottom of bulletin board.  Create columns for walkers (foot), automobile passengers (car), and bus passengers (column for each bus number).
  Familiarize oneself with the Tom Snyder Graph Club software.
  Use patterns or Ellison machine to cut out shoes, buses, and cars.
Procedures:

Day 1

  1. Read story--This Is the Way We Go to School.
  2. Distribute cutouts of cars, buses, shoes and have students decorate them by  adding details.  Make a class pictograph showing how children get to school (bus & #, car, walk).  Students write their names on a bus, shoe, or car.  Graph the results on the bulletin board.
  3. Compare and discuss the results of the bulletin board.
Day 2
  1. Utilize graphing software to demonstrate graph making skills via presentation television.
  2. Students will create a pictograph incorporating information from the bulletin board using Tom Snyder Graph Club or Excel.


Modifications:

Supply special needs students with a model of a completed graph and provide assistance for successful completion.
 

Enrichment Activities:

This Is the Way We Go to School takes readers on a journey
     around the world and identifies different countries, celebrating the
     many different ways children travel to the classroom.
  Print a copy of an online world map .
  Students will be asked to locate various countries.


Evaluation/Assessment:

Teacher observation and assessment of students' completed graphs.
