Title:  School Bus Safety

Learner Outcomes:

  Students will recall and state bus safety rules.
  Students will color given picture and write safety rule.
  Students will sing given song.


Duration of Lesson:

1 - 45 minute session
 

Materials:

  Handouts--School Bus Safety Rules, The Wheels on the Bus song
     (modified), and Picture of students waiting for bus.
Bus Safety Song
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
     round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round, 
     All through the town.

The lights on the bus go flash, flash, flash,
     flash, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash
The lights on the bus go flash, flash, flash,
     All through the town.

When riding on the bus stay in your seat,

  Presentation TV or LCD panel
Teacher Notes:
 
  Bookmark necessary sites to save time.
  Get Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) signed by each student and
     parent.
Procedures:
  1. Share the following poem with the students:
  2. School Bus
    Vroom, vroom, vroom-
    Hop on, there's room,
    On the shiny yellow school bus
    That is taking us to school!

    And when the school day ends, 
    We'll ride with all our friends
    On the shiny yellow school bus
    That will bring us home from school!

  3. Use Power Point presentation to introduce and teach school bus safety rules.
  4. Color the picture of the students waiting on the bus.
  5. Students recall safety rules by brainstorming and then writing one rule on the picture.
  6. Teach song:  The Wheels on the Bus (modified).


Modifications:

Teacher will assist special needs students with the spelling of identified bus safety rule for their picture.
 

Enrichment Activities:

In computer lab, allow students the opportunity to explore the Vince & Larry's School Bus Safety site.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Evaluate accuracy of school bus safety rule written in sentence format.
Informal teacher observation of oral review.
