Lesson 1 Tony Beaver
Grade Level: Grades 2, 3, and 4

Learner Outcomes:
- The students will identify
the United States when shown a map.
- The students will identify West Virginia by
shape and relative location on the United States map.
- The students will understand the concept of
an exaggeration.
- The students will read or listen to and discuss
the various stories of Tony Beaver.
- The students will use a dictionary.
Duration of Lesson: 1- 75 minute
session (4th Grade may want to use 2 days.)
Materials:
- Map of the United
States
- Map of West Virginia
- Dictionaries
- Books
- Drawing paper
- Copy of a United States map for each child to use throughout
the unit
Technology Tools/Courseware:
- Multimedia computer with Internet capability
- Data Projector
- Can use overhead and transparencies.
Teacher Notes:
- The teacher will need to adapt each part of this lesson
to the age and ability of the students.
- Obtain a signed Acceptable Use Policy,
if needed.
- Provide the class with a variety of Tall Tale books
from the school library to be reading before the unit is taught.
- Get materials as listed above.
Procedures:
- Have students brainstorm "What is a tall tale?"
- Discuss tall tales and folklore.
- Give a description of a tall tale. (Tall Tales) (American
Tall Tales) On this site enter a search for tall tales.
- Have students look up the following words in a dictionary.
- tale
- folklore
- exaggeration
- griddle
- Show a map of the United
States and ask, "What country is this?"
- Discuss.
- Show a map of West Virginia
and ask, "What state is this?"
- Discuss.
- Ask where West Virginia is on the United States map.
- Give students a United
States map and have them color in West Virginia.
- Read Tony Beaver, Griddle Skater. (Can be read
before unit starts.)
- Can read short story at Tony
Beaver.
- Read Tony Beaver, West Virginian. or
go to Adventures.
- With use of a data projector and Tall Tales
, web site the class listens to Phil Wyatt read a story about Tony Beaver.
- Discuss after each reading.
- Students may draw a picture, write a story, or retell
the Tony Beaver story in written form.
Modifications:
- Have peer tutors for the dictionary and map work,
if necessary.
- Have a volunteer or older student read Tony Beaver story
to the reading challenged child.
Enrichment Activities:
- 4th Grade may use the 4th Grade Scott Foresman
reading book and Horizons of West Virginia to
develop this lesson further.
- Oral Book reports
- 4th grade could discuss the United States map more
thoroughly. ( Example: Discuss physical features.)
- Do a report on West Virginia.
- Game of "Truth or Exaggeration." (MS Word) (RTF)
