Lesson 2 Pecos Bill

- The students will review map skills with a United
States map.
- The students will read or listen to and discuss the
various stories of Pecos Bill
- The students will use a dictionary.
- The students will retell a Pecos Bill story using
the Flannel Board Activity.

or 2 - 75 minute lesson

- Map of the United
States (or transparency of the United States)
- Map of
Texas
- Dictionaries
- Books (MS Word) (RTF)
- Drawing paper

Multimedia computer with Internet capability
Can use overhead and transparencies
Teacher Notes:
- Obtain an Acceptable Use Policy,
if needed.
- The teacher will need to adapt each part of this
lesson to the age and ability of the students.
- Provide the class with a variety of Tall Tale books
from the school library to be reading before the unit is taught.
- Copy of a United States map from Lesson 1 will be used.
- Get materials listed above.
Procedures:
- Review the definition of
tall tales.
- Review the vocabulary from Lesson 1.
- Have students look for cyclone in a dictionary.
- Show the United States map and ask, "What country
is this?"
- Point to West Virginia and ask, "What state is this?"
- Show a Map of Texas
and ask if anyone knows what state it is.
- Discuss.
- Using the United States map from Lesson 1, have the students color Texas.
- Have students read a Pecos Bill tale from the school
library.
- Also available on Internet: Pecos and Lightning
and Tall Tales.
- Discuss the stories that were read independently
or read aloud.
- Listen to a song about Pecos Bill on the Internet
at Tall Tales.
- Put students in cooperative groups. Give each group one copy of the
Flannel Board activity. (MS Word) (RTF)
- Students color and assemble the figures from above
activity.
- Have one group retell or make a new tall tale or
story to perform for another group. Then swap roles.
- Make a missing person poster for Pecos Bill. Draw
what he looked like. Tell where he was last seen. Give reward
amount.
- Students go to Internet sites for stories, games, and activities. Pecos
Stories
- Additional information to be used as needed.

Modifications:
- If the Flannel Board activity goes well, it could
be performed for other classes.
- Use peer tutors for the dictionary and map work.
- Have a volunteer or older student read a Pecos Bill
tale to the reading challenged child.
Enrichment Activities:
- Illustrate one of the stories, could be a cooperative
grouping activity.
- Students may use story and questions from lesson
at Folklore.
