Taking Care of Business

Learner Outcomes: The student will develop components for starting a business as well as composing a power point presentation.

Duration of Lesson: 7 to 10 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each

Materials:  Teacher created Power Point and technology tools

Technology Tools/Courseware: Computer with internet accessibility's, printer,  Microsoft PowerPoint, and a Data Projector

Grade:  10

Procedures:Day 1
The teacher may open the lesson with the her own power point presentation, or the song Taking Care of Business,  by Bachman, Turner, and Overdrive. The students will be divided into small groups.  Each group will be required to develop a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with the following: a business with a name, business logo or some form of advertisement, product that the business will be selling, and it's location.  The students will be required to visit the following site on the internet: www.sba.gov/starting_business/index.html
and visit each of the start up topics.  The rest of the class period will be spent with each group deciding on their business.

Day 2-10
During these class periods the students will be creating their PowerPoint presentation with the help of the teacher.  On the final day or days, each group will be required to present their PowerPoint slide show to the whole class.

Modifications: The teacher will follow all criteria set forth for special education students IEP's.

Enrichment Activities: Interview a small business owner about his/her business start up experience.

Evaluation/Assessment: Teamwork participation and cooperation  and completed Power- Point project and presentation
