Learner Outcomes: Students will define ledger; create a basic, personal spending ledger, write a Process Analysis essay explaining the step-by-step process of developing and keeping said ledger, along with a request for business/record-keeping information from websites/local businesses via a business letter. The student will keep in mind that the balances in the ledger accounts will be transferred to the work sheet in order to eventually prepare financial statements.
Duration of Lesson: One 45-minute class session, after which students will develop a running ledger from their four-week, daily journals.
Materials: Definition, explanation, and demonstration of ledger development; sample copy of ledger for each student (rough draft=hard copy), access to Microsoft/Office/Word/Excel (ability to input data onto spreadsheet); text or teacher-made/website handout on developing and utilizing a record-keeping system within personal and business settings.

Procedures: Define, explain, demonstrate, and give each student a sample (Century 21 Accounting, or other text) of the development of a ledger. Discuss four-week assignment of creating a ledger from general journal as to spending/money earned/allocated/spent/loaned. Introduce/teach Microsoft Office/Word/Excel, along with Process Analysis/How to essay, and writing/typing a business letter.
Modifications: Make on an individual student basis according to 504/IEP.
Enrichment Activities: After students are taught format for writing business letters, they will search specified websites for business development information and write letters to addresses given for such requests. Local business owners could also be written to via students’ local postal service.
Evaluation/Assessment: Individual hand-written (hard) copy of Process Analysis/How to essay and business letter created in Microsoft Office/Word, along with ledger spreadsheet created in Microsoft Excel, will be turned in to demonstrate understanding and application of material taught.
