Preparing a Balance Sheet

Grade Level: 10

Subject(s):  Accounting

Learner Outcomes:  The student will prepare a balance sheet using the information contained on a work sheet.

Duration:  One 45 minute class period.

Materials: Power point presentation on parts of a balance sheet, Century 21 Accounting textbook, hand-held calculator.

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Presentation devices (multi-media projector), calculator.

Teacher Notes:  The teacher must be literate with power point presentations.

Procedures:
                1.  The teacher will begin with a review of the work sheet to reinforce the source of information.
                2.  Students will watch slides to learn the parts that make up the balance sheet.
                3.  Direct the students to the work sheet section containing the balance sheet information
                4.  Show on the form that the heading is to be centered on the first three lines.
                5.  Show that the asset section is written on the left side of the form.
                6.  Show the liabilities section on the top of the right side of the form.
                7.  Show the owner's equity section written below the liabilities section.
                8.  Emphasize legible penmanship, ruling lines, and double ruling columns (it's necessary).
                9.  Show the formula for finding owner's equity and how to calculate it.
              10.  Double rule the columns after verifying the correctness of the copying and calculations.
              11.  Give students a completed worksheet, balance sheet form, calculator and assign Problem 2.
              12.   The students will follow the directions from the power point presentation to identify the four parts of the balance sheet.  Following teacher instruction, the students will be able to correctly enter the amounts and complete the balance sheet using pencil, working paper form, and a calculator.

Modifications:  For special needs students the slides will be paused for additional time for understanding.
                         Peer tutoring.
                         Extended time.
                         Give more one on one attention.

Enrichment Activities:  Look at business journals to see actual balance sheets or key amounts in prepared Excel balance sheet form.

Evaluation:  The handwritten copy of the student's balance sheet will be evaluated.
