elements in the story after it has been read.

comparing 2 versions of the tall tale story.

involving using a map key and a map scale.
Students will complete a state research
activity using the Internet.
Students will give an oral presentation
for the state researched.
Duration of Lesson: 3-4 60-90
minute class periods
Materials:
One copy of Paul
Bunyan by Steven Kellogg for each student pair
Art mediums (markers, colored pencils,
crayons, etc...)
Student folders from lesson 1
Technology Tools:
Internet accessible computers
Internet access
Printer with colored ink cartridge
Projection Device (LCD Projector)
Overhead projector
Paint program/software
Teacher Notes:
- Students will need a parent signed AUP.
- Students should know how to construct a Venn Diagram.
- Power Point Presentation does not use a mouse click to advance
to the next frame.
- Additional class time may be needed to prepare for the oral
presentations.
Procedure:
Days One and Two
1. Review the tall tale elements -- students
will need "Tall Tales" sheet from their unit folder
for reference
2. Pair students for reading Paul Bunyan
as a shared reading activity -- discuss story as it is being read referring
to Discussion
Questions
3. Review the tall tale elements found
within the story
4. Discuss the fact that there can be
more than one version of the same story, point out that authors choose which
parts of a story they wish to use or emphasize
5. Students will read a different version
of the tall tale using the Internet web site - www.paulbunyantrail.com -
using the same student pair from the shared reading activity
a. After reading that version students
will complete a Venn Diagram accessing the Internet web site comparing
the 2 versions of the story - Paul Bunyan A (S. Kellogg) and Paul Bunyan B
(Internet)
*There must be at least 3 items in each
section of the diagram.
6. Discuss completed Venn Diagrams making
a class diagram using the overhead projector from student responses
Days Three and Four
2. Students will review the states Paul
Bunyan traveled by completing the
Traveling the Country with Paul Bunyan worksheet
46 and 47 as independent work
*Teacher should review the information
at the top of worksheet 46 on using a map key and a map scale.
3. Check/reveiw answers using the Answer key
for worksheet 46 and discuss as needed
4. Pair students for research activity
-- choose one of the states from worksheet 47 and complete the State Fact Research
sheet accessing one or more of the web sites listed below:
5. After completing the fact sheet student
pairs will organize the information to prepare an oral presentation about
that state with a visual aid such as -- a. poster b. photos/pictures
c. map
**Students may wish to print pictures
from Internet websites or may draw using art mediums or use paint software
program located under accessories
6. Each student pair will give their
oral presentation in front of the class
**Both students must contribute during
the presentation.
Modifications:
Follow modifications per individual students'
IEP.
Pair students for group work according
to abilities for assistance for lower level students.
Students without an AUP will need to
use other reference materials for the research activity.
Students without an AUP will generate
a Venn Diagram using the paint software program.
Enrichment Activities:
Students can access the Internet to locate
more versions of the Paul Bunyan tall tale.
Students can use a word processing program
to write a report to accompany their oral presentations.
Students can write their version of the
Paul Bunyan tall tale and read it to the class.
