Students will locate geographical places on a US map.

Duration of Lesson: 3 60-90 minute class periods

Materials:
Large class US map posted in the room
Tall Tales folder/sheet
Videotaping permission form  (Word Doc.) (RTF)
Art mediums (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc...)
Blank Videocassettes)
Video Resource List (Word Doc.) (RTF)
Video chosen from list
Good Listening Habits sheet (Word Doc.) (RTF)
Overhead transparencies/markers

Technology Tools:
TV/VCR
Camcorder
Internet accessible computers
Word processing software program
Printer
Overhead projector

Teacher Notes:
  • Students will need a parent signed AUP.
  • Students will need a parent signed permission form for videotaping activity.
  • Contact a local "storyteller" to be a guest speaker/reader. The local library should be an excellent resource.
  • Students should know how to use the copy/paste function on a computer.

Procedure:
Day One
1. Review the tall tale elements by having students give examples from stories read -- use overhead projector to list responses
2. Students will access the Tall Tale Internet web site to write their own tall tale by clicking on
"Write Your Own Tall Tale Link"
a. Students will follow directions on web site using copy/paste function
b. Students will use Tall Tales sheet from folder as a reference
c. Students will use spell check tool prior to printing the story
d. Students will select an art medium to illustrate their story
3. Students will share their stories with the class, discuss geographic places mentioned and locate on the class US map
4. Discuss how storytellers use vocal and facial expressions along with gestures or movement/actions to enhance by creating suspense or building to the climax of the story
Introduce the guest speaker/storyteller to the class explaining that he/she will be telling a tall tale (perhaps an unfamiliar story) to the class
*It may be necessary to review good listening habits with the students.

Day Two
1. Review the storytelling activity from Day One activity by discussing the vocal/facial expressions, gestures, etc... used by the storyteller
2. Explain that each student will be telling a tall tale to the class just like the storyteller did and that they will need to use the same techniques. Discuss that they will be videotaped to be viewed later and a copy made for the library to be used by other classes. A copy will also be given to the guest from Day One as thank you for visiting the class.
3. Have each student select a tall tale and then allow time for students to review story and practice their storytelling.
4. Begin the story presentations by reminding students to once again use good listening habits.
5. View the video if all students have been taped and as time permits

Day Three
1. Begin the class with continuing storytelling activity as needed -- finish presentations or watch video
2. Students will watch teacher selected video from Video Resource List to culminate the unit

Modifications:
Follow modifications per each individual student's IEP.
Students who are not comfortable "reading" before their peers may "read" to the teacher and do not have to be videotaped.
Select versions of tall tale stories that meet the needs of lower level reading students.

Enrichment Activities:
More advance students will write their tall tale without the aid of the outline/form given on the Tall Tale web site.
Students pantomime scenes from a tall tale with the rest of the class "guessing" the action and/or tall tale story/character.
Students will work in small groups to present a tall tale as a play. *This would require more than a 3-day plan.
Students will research the tall tale characters discussed in Lesson 1 by completing the
 Tall Tale Character Chart.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Completed original tall tale stories
Listening checklist
Storytelling Rubric
