Missing In Action


 



Grade Level:  2

Subject:  Health, Science, Language Arts

Day 1 Learner Outcomes:

    1.  Students will identify the number of primary teeth.
    2.  Students will collect, organize, and display tooth data.
    3.  Students will use a computer web site.

Duration:  30 - 45 minutes

Materials:  transparencies, overhead projector, markers, mirrors, chalkboard, teacher created key for a  tooth glyph

Technology:  overhead projector, computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:  Have signed AUP Acceptable Use Policy.
                        Have a tooth model available and review parts.
                        Create a key for tooth glyphs.

Procedures:
    1.  Give a pair of children a mirror and have them count the amount of teeth they each have.  Write down the number to use later.
    2.  A teacher created transparency of the teeth will be placed on the overhead.  Using a marker, a child will number each tooth on the overhead transparency.
    3.  Using the number of teeth each child counted, make a bar graph on the blackboard to show children the class results.
    4.  Create a tooth glyph and name it.

Modifications:  1.  Pair students to accommodate different needs.
                         2.  Follow special needs procedures.

Enrichment:   1.  Recommend reading the story  Arthur's Loose Tooth
                      2.  Students will write a story about losing their first tooth.
                           3.   Students will use their glyph as a cover sheet for their own tooth story.

Evaluation:  Complete a rubric for each child.
