Plaque Attack


 


Grade Level:  2

Subject:  Health, Science, Language Arts

Day 4 Learner Outcomes

    1.  Students will learn about good dental hygiene.
    2.  Students will discuss what things are bad for teeth.
    3.  Students will  identify what creates plaque.

Duration:  30 - 45 minutes

Materials:  hard boiled eggs for each child, a cup for each child, dark soda, video camera, TV/VCR, computer with internet access

Technology Tools/Courseware:  video camera, TV/VCR, computer with internet access

Teacher Notes:  Signed AUP Acceptable Use Policy

Procedures:

    1.  Discuss things they do which may be good or bad for their teeth.
    2.  Have students put egg (tooth) in dark soda and predict what will happen as the tooth sits in the soda overnight.
    3.  Students will create pictures of their predictions to show what they think the egg will look like after it soaks overnight.  Discuss predictions.
    4.  Students will work in small groups to create posters and presentations about tooth care.
    5.  Video tape the presentations.
    6.  Students will write in their electronic journal about their poster.

Modifications:  Pair students to accommodate different learning styles.
                         Follow special needs procedures.

Enrichment: Watch video tape of student presentations.
                     Recommended reading   Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist
                     Visit the Web site "What Causes Tooth Decay" and "Cleansing Your Teeth and Gums".

Evaluation:  Complete rubric for each child.
